Wow. One can feel your passion by the way you've responded. I like the manner in how you delve into how the platform has changed how you view your dedication to the craft. Also, impressive background.

Nice interview. Good questions and good answers. I'm still pretty new here, but I can relate to much of what Chris said.

Great interview Chris. Completely agree with you on so many things, especially how to approach paid subscriptions on Substack and being consistent with your audience.

"I began to ascribe to these a meaning that I was only a writer when these happened. That I was only a writer when the gatekeepers opened the gate and let me in for a little while before throwing me back out to discover a new password that would get them to open the gate again."

This seems to be a recurring theme on the platform. It will be interesting to see, if Substack builds in a store feature or some tool that can compete with Amazon's KDP, how the broader landscape might change. I'm working with a web designer to overhaul my website and to include a store. I plan to bundle some of my Substack essays as ebooks. But it would be nice to be able to do that right in the platform itself.

As for whole assing one thing, I find that I have not submitted many longform works to magazines since starting on Substack. It's the one tradeoff I'm wrestling with. As always, it's good to hear how other writers are thinking about these things.

The mags ought to come to us Joshua. Why're we chasing them around? : )

Yes, each time I hear a writer bring this up, I think, this is building into a picture, I wonder if @Substack are watching, and whether it’s something they’re thinking of responding to.

I love all the insights from this interview! I had the same insights after spending 20 months on Substack. This immediate connection with the reader is truly inspiring for writers and it's great to see this confirmed by a seasoned writer who has multiple venues for sharing his work.

These ideas about form and experimenting with the way the reader accesses your stories is really interesting. A lot of this is very relatable, Chris, especially the discussion of payment (which I think is also about a lot more in terms of how we engage and experience the platform). Thanks for another great interview, Eleanor!
