"I began to ascribe to these a meaning that I was only a writer when these happened. That I was only a writer when the gatekeepers opened the gate and let me in for a little while before throwing me back out to discover a new password that would get them to open the gate again."

This seems to be a recurring theme on the platform. It will be interesting to see, if Substack builds in a store feature or some tool that can compete with Amazon's KDP, how the broader landscape might change. I'm working with a web designer to overhaul my website and to include a store. I plan to bundle some of my Substack essays as ebooks. But it would be nice to be able to do that right in the platform itself.

As for whole assing one thing, I find that I have not submitted many longform works to magazines since starting on Substack. It's the one tradeoff I'm wrestling with. As always, it's good to hear how other writers are thinking about these things.

These ideas about form and experimenting with the way the reader accesses your stories is really interesting. A lot of this is very relatable, Chris, especially the discussion of payment (which I think is also about a lot more in terms of how we engage and experience the platform). Thanks for another great interview, Eleanor!
