This was right on point. I’m shattered. I feel I need a few days to even process what just happened to me, in reading The Road. Question: have you watched the film?
Happens to be my favourite novel! You've picked up on exactly how I've always felt about it - that for a story of such unrelenting horror, coldness, barbarism, and hopelessness, the love quietly conveyed and the beauty of the language somehow makes the humanity at its core shine out beyond the grey hellscape the man and the boy traverse.
I mean, if Mr McCarthy isn’t paying you commission, he should be. Nothing has ever made me want to read a book more....& that includes the serialisation of Adrian Mole on radio 4 when I was 10.
I could be wrong, I often am but in my memory it was myself who acquired that book as I searched his archive for masterpieces, and left it on that shelf .Cormac McCarthy still stands head and shoulders above 95% of writers in my humble view.

I haven’t. Not sure I could bring myself to. It took me years to approach the book….
Exactly me. I’m not sure I’ll ever be ready to watch Viggo Mortenson and a little boy travel that Road on film…

Exactly this. I feel rocked by it.
