I often wonder what my parents were actually thinking of me. Mum's not good with apologies. Shell just say, see, you should be like me.

So human, as always, in the directness and immediacy and clarity of your expression. That's the experience in reading you. Even when it's something I haven't experienced or don't personally feel (not here - I'm in the midst of reading a bunch of your pieces to catch up), I never think, "What's she talking about?" I always understand.

Evocative, as always. I wonder if the guilt is fair to yourself, though? Your mother was protecting you, and you couldn't necessarily have known. I think about this a lot as a father -- how to avoid burdening my children with my fears or pain. And I wonder if your mother might have been glad, on some level, that you had the freedom to embrace your youth, that you weren't burdened by her sadness. Such an empathic essay, but be kind to your younger self, too? That young woman didn't know any better. She wasn't you at your current stage of life and awareness. Fair?

Fair! And thanks. That was a nice reminder.

So true. You just don’t know until you know...then accountability replaces blame. Love the treasures you dig up and how you write about them 🌟
