Another fascinating insight and a new name for me. Interesting stuff, David. This is such a brilliant series, Eleanor.

I love this series Eleanor, perfect for a little snapshot into other writers, some I’m familiar with and others not. It’s fascinating to get behind the scenes a little, beyond what we can read on a writer’s about page. I love your approach to paid subscriptions David and your honesty and humility here and in your writing.

Some writers consider Substack a refuge from political or geopolitical issues that are debated in an aggressive, hostile manner complete with thinly veiled anger and contempt running above and below the surface in major media. Thoughtful writing on politics is an endangered species rarely seen and rarely as much appreciated when it appears as it should be. In some societies, if there is a huge political issue that is polarizing everyone to the point of haggling with each other daily over what should be done, the village elders will turn to a respected lady or gentleman who is known for their wisdom and thoughtful all things considered approach to any issue. So the hagglers can take a time out. Everyone can calm down and listen or read this reasonable voice. Such people are incredibly valuable. Thanks for this very timely post.

It’s amazing, David, that your probing and excellent letter evolved from making comments that gave you no pleasure. Way to go, Debbie!

Between 4- and 5-speed manual cars, I’m a 5-speed driver, no question. Thank you for helping me understand that “Quiet Reading” is probably in 2nd gear, with more ahead.

Combat juggling!?! Who knew? This reminds me of watching a family of brothers tussle/play. I wonder, if angry MAGA men could learn to play this sport, would they find they had no more need for politics?

Great questions! Loved reading this. I remember a post written by David a very long time about, I think it was about his mother. I went back but couldn't find it. Very moving piece. I hope I'm not referring to the wrong stack now. I too am over subscribed, so can relate to that. What's the cure?
