Such beautiful detail in this. Even something so small and simple as Janet reaching into her pocket for a tissue when Monica asks her questions. It killed me!
Gah! I love this so much! I’ve been rooting for Janet all along, she just needed a force of women ten deep to show her a moment of strength within the possible. I see her own skin grow “shiny with life beyond walls” as she imagines into it all. Beautiful Eleanor. So much hope and desperately needed right now.
I think the most telling thoughts in these two chapters were Janet's wondering why her brother hadn't stopped her from marrying Ray and her memory of skipping with her sister. Both give greater depth to Janet's disappointment as to how life has turned out so far for her.
Wonderful. I love the song and the singing at the end. And this line: "The woman, Monica; she said her name as Janet turned to see, she said, I’m Monica as if being Monica was the best thing in the world." It feels as if a door is opening for Janet.
Love Janet’s choices here. And that song! Echoes of the St Francis prayer I’ve been reflecting on — darkness and hope and light.
I’m going to post a recording of the song…
Wonderful!
Final lines. That’s another of your craft skills I’m in awe of.
Damn, this is a very good chapter.
