I had a visceral reaction to the violence of these men. I feel like earlier Bridget, astounded by the unfairness, astonished to see how the world *really* is. I so appreciate Bridget as the avatar to a coming-of-age with the fierce and loving truth-telling of her mentors. It’s important to remember that this is *still* how the world is. And that such stupidity and injustice can — and must — be resisted. And that our bodies, collectively, are a force to be reckoned with.
Watching Bridget’s transformation demonstrates just how powerful and influential an environment can be on a developing self. At home, she was timid, lost, insecure. At Greenham she’s fierce and unabashedly so. So curious to read how this all evolves for her, will it ever become too much or will she rise to levels of leadership at the Commons? Don’t answer.:)
"They call us a nuisance as if that wasn't the point" -- sums up the task these women undertook to make such a statement that has been too easily forgotten. All of _Fallout_ has been a striking reminder.
Just stumbled upon this as a new follow. Beautifully written. May just have to pop back to chapter one. I’m pretty new to Substack and ever more impressed by what I find here.
What an image of the machines rolling in and the men hopping out with their limp ties. It reminded me of 2 different movies where men come plowing in to fight aliens but really had no idea what they were doing..
“Bridget felt like an animal beside something caged”… if ever there was a simile so apt, it’s here!
